One of the more iconic images of the Second World War, this photo of Sandman (42-40402, 98BG) was taken by the strike camera mounted aboard Squaw (41-11761, 98BG).  Because this camera was mirrored, this image is often incorrectly flipped horizontally.


These formation charts are reproduced using original documents from their corresponding units, supplemented with after-action reports detailing the fates of the aircraft involved.  Tan aircraft are those assigned to the Ninth Air Force and olive drab aircraft are those on loan from the Eighth.  Red stripes indicate aircraft lost, yellow stripes indicate mission aborts, and blue stripes indicate those that were interned by neutral countries.
